On Wednesday, Feb. 10,  the Yoakum County Library in Plains was sprinkled with smiles and valentines. Almost a dozen children gathered to begin an early celebration of the holiday of love. And we love StoryTime.

After a quick count-up to the date and a discussion about the spring-like weather in the winter season, the children huddled for the hand-over-heart pledges to the United States and Texas flags. Following the recitations, the youngsters sang the ABC song, as well as “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed” and a special February 14th rendition of “Patty Cake” called “Be Mine, Valentine.” Those in attendance for the festivities were Jordy Bell, Ella and Case Bearden, Aries Jasso, Ethan Garcia, Hadlee Bell, Nathan McAdams, Ian DeLaRosa, Ethan Moya, and Ansony and Bryson Garcia-Vargas.

The read aloud time started with a couple of sure-to-be favorites: “Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse!” and “Love!” A super-cute new arrival called “Here Comes Valentine’s, Cat” was the next selection. The final story was an annually adored (and best-enjoyed-as-a-song) selection “The Ballad of Valentine.”

As “Clifford: The Big Red Dog Cleo’s Valentine Surprise” showed on the TV, the children enjoyed a plethora of red goodies, from watermelon hearts to chocolate-dipped Oreos to pink-iced cupcakes. As the group prepared to leave, the “Wave Goodbye” activity ended the time with more smiles. The children picked up their Valentine’s bags, filled to the brim with a variety of valentines and a lovely hand-crafted bookmark for their weekly reads at home. New-comer Hadlee Bell won the special giveaway: her own copy of “Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse.”

All children and their caregivers are welcome to attend the StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains. Every Wednesday at 10 am during the regular school year the group meets for some literary fun!
