February 24, 2016, was a Wednesday to remember at the Yoakum County Library in Plains. After counting up to twenty-four, discussing the weather, and saying the pledges to American and Texas flags, the group celebrated “National Tortilla Chip Day” alongside the state dish—chili—with samples.

Enjoying the interactive song “Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree,” complete with puppets, the group also sang their ABCs, “Days of the Week,” and “This Little Light of Mine.” After hearing some Texas historical facts about chili, the children each received a small container of chili with a baggie of tortilla chips to snack on while listening to the reading of “Armadilly Chili.” Those in attendance were Ben and Gershom McAdams; Johan Neudorf; Jordy Bell; Ariah, Andi, & Avery Coronado; Ian DeLaRosa; Ethan Garcia; Katarina Harms; and Kynlee Martin. Many agreed that Texas chili is for adults…but chips are for kids.

Since February is also “Responsible Pet Owners Month,” the youngsters also enjoyed a couple of books about pets. “Frankie Works the Night Shift” included interactive counting as well as many giggles as the working cat chased a mouse. “Grumpy Gloria” was a comical story about a dog who missed playing with her owners. The group ended the time together with a cartoon video of Scholastic Books’ “Bark, George.” There were chili and pet coloring sheets with fruit snacks for all the smiling kiddos. The door prize, “Polar Animals,” was won by Andi Coronado.

StoryTime is open to kids of all ages and their caregivers, meeting weekly at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesdays at 10 am during the regular school year.
