Arrrrrrrre We Having Fun?! Plains Yoakum County Library StoryTime

by Eric

pirateAhoy, Landlubbers! Avast ye, StoryTime at Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesday, September 21, 2016, was full of lads and lassies ready for Yo-ho-ho Fun!

Those in attendance for this pirate-themed literacy time were Cecilia Marquez Erozo; Annabel & Emily Bean; Sofia, KK, & Olivia Lopez; Alan Morales; Malorie Cabellero; Jacob Wiebe; Abigail, Hope, & Lanie Simpson; Agatha Harms; Jazzmine Lorea; Ansony & Bryson Garcia; and Tabitha, Selah, Elijah, Kefira, & Gabe Blessing.

Following the warm-up activities of pledges and calendar counting, the “Days of the Week” song was energetically clapped.

Because it was the monthly “Dinosaur Day,” the StoryTime Lady donned home-made dinosaur “feet” and taught the song “I’m a Mean Old Dinosaur” to the group. The first book, called Pirasaurs! by Josh Funk, combined dinosaurs and pirates—perfect for the day.

Then the 2-year-old mateys were invited to render assistance with the “Little Dinosaur” felt story, complete with a bilingual presentation of the colored caves. “The Pirate Song,” a repeat song from last week, was then actively sung and enjoyed by the crowd.

The next book was by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort titled “Pirates Love Underpants.” As anticipated, the children giggled with this humorous read. “Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!” was a lively song with the kids blasting off to the pirates’ ship.

“The Pirate Jamboree” by Mark Teague completed the book selections, and the last song was “Baby Shark.”

The video selection was “Happy Birthday, Dog” from PBS’s WordWorld, and each child received a sticker for being a cooperative listener. Traditionally closing with the “Wave Good-bye” rhyme, each child looted a treasure bag as they “walked the plank!”

Family StoryTime meets at the Yoakum County Library in Plains at 10:00 a.m. each Wednesday during the regular school year. All ages are welcome.
