Have An Attitude of Not Giving Up

“Attitude reflects leadership, captain.” This is my favorite quote from the movie; Remember The Titans. Do we remember those five words Winston Churchill once said? “Never, never, never give up.” Our attitude does reflect almost all that we do and how we take on situations, problems and even the good life. If we have a bad attitude, we are seen as grumpy, rude even arrogant. Typically if our attitude is good, we are found to be delightful, friendly and of course humble.

Our attitude can most certainly take away from our daily grind and cause us to give up on things and having the right attitude can create perseverance. Too many of us place ourselves above what we can really accomplish, that’s just human nature. When that happens, expectation and reality clash and that equals frustration. We get down on ourselves, feeling as if the universe and those that are in our surroundings are against us. Let me be the first one to say, that is not true.

I want to encourage you today to take a different perspective on your attitude about life so that you don’t give up. I’m reminded of the story about the farmer whose donkey fell into a well. The donkey was whimpering and obviously wanting out. The farmer couldn’t get the donkey out by himself, and realized that this well wasn’t good anymore, so it needed to be closed anyway. The farmer decided to get some neighbor friends to help close the well and take care of two things at one time.

As the farmer’s friends began to help shovel dirt into the well, the donkey whimpered again knowing what was going on. They kept shoveling, and the farmer looked down into the well and noticed what the donkey was doing. Each time a shovel full of dirt would hit the donkey, it would shake off the dirt and step on it. Eventually the farmer and his friends were astonished at what happened. By the time they kept shoveling, the donkey had finally stepped out of the well.

This is the thing, life is always going to put things on you. Our attitude towards difficult and good times can determine how we handle our situations. The farmer had an attitude of giving up as where the donkey found a way to get out.  If we can put things in perspective of how we view life, we can really see what is most important and what has little value to your life.

Every step we take is another step of not stopping. We continue to keep moving, even when we fall or when life throws a curve ball at us. A few things to remember about having a good attitude that helps us not give up in this life. Forgive people for the things they do wrong to you. It frees your heart towards all. Secondly, be thankful for what you have. Most of the time there are others who don’t have what you have. Quit worrying. Especially the small things. Worry creates stress, stress creates a bad mood, and in-turn creates a bad attitude. Also be kind and don’t take yourself so seriously.  If we do opposite of this we then lose sight of the goal. Find what motivates you, and know that nothing is over until God says its over.

Let me leave you with some scripture today that helps me to have a great attitude of not giving up.

“But Jesus looked at them and said to them, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matt. 19:26 NKJV

Have a blessed day!
