We will be back at it this evening with high school basketball. In girls district play, they will finish up tonight and in the boys District 2-4A, things are really getting interesting for third and fourth place.

Congratulations is given to the Ropes Lady Eagles for winning the District 6-1A Title. The Lady Eagle have an opportunity tonight to go 30-0 in regular season, however Coach McCann of the Lady Eagles said,”We have not focused on perfect record and that was not a goal of ours.” Even if Ropes loses tonight to the Lady Cats, they are still the district champs. Coach McCann said, “We want to use tonight’s game to get better at the little things heading into the playoffs.” Coach McCann said they found a quote that they use often, “If you are to big to do the little things, then you will be to little to get the big thing.” “That has been our focus!”

Both Ropes Lady Eagles and Wellman-Union Lady Cats are in the playoffs it will be a great experience for both teams. Ropes will have a bye the first round and Wellman-Union will take on either Lorenzo or Whiteface for bi-district. The Greenwood Rangerettes are also District Champs for District 4-4A. They will play the fourth place team out of District 3-4A. The Denver City Fillies and Levelland Lady Loboettes are currently tied for first place in District 2-4A and if both Fillies and Loboettes win tonight then there will be a seeding game to figure our who gets first and second. Both team are in the top five in state in class 4A.

In girls District 5-2A there is much that could happen tonight. First of all Sundown has already taken the district crown and the Seagraves Lady Eagle have earned a trip to the playoffs. The next three teams are in a mess. Tahoka Lady Bulldogs goes to Smyer and if they lose, they become 4-6. There would be a tie for third and fourth place. However, if Tahoka wins they are in at 5-5 and tied possibly with Seagraves at second place, and even if Plains wins, then there will be a tie for the forth seed. So to recap, Tahoka and Plains girls need to win to stay alive for the playoffs.

On the boys side of things, in District 6-1A, Meadow, New Home and Ropes have clinched playoff spots. The question remains is, what will their seedings be. New Home goes on the road back to back against Meadow first and then Ropes. Two opponents of New Home that will certainly be a thorn in their side. If Meadow wins tonight against New Home and then Wilson on Friday and Ropes wins tonight at home against Wellman-Union and then New Home on Friday, then there will be a three way tie for first place. Now if Meadow loses tonight and wins Friday and Ropes wins tonight and loses Friday, then they will be in a tie for second place and will play a seeding game.

In the 2A ranks, District 5-2A has some quirky options. There are still three district games left for the boys. Even though Sundown sets at top with a 6-1 record and Seagraves at the bottom with 1-6 record, the competition is not close to being over. Anything can happen such as Smyer winning their final three could give them the district title or a tie with Sundown. Seagraves wins out and Plains and Tahoka win tonight, and Plains wins on the 9th of Feb., Tahoka loses the same night and both Plains and Tahoka lose their last district games, then there would be three way tie for the fourth seed, because Smyer and Morton will be playoff eligible. So to recap this district, too many scenarios in such little time.

Going to Boys District 2-4A, Brownfield certainly let their presence be know last Friday night by winning over Levelland 62-42. The Cubs have struggled through district this year only winning one game, up until the second time they played Levelland and Nunie Ramirez finally hit his stride to help lift the Cubs to a district win. This really helps the Cubs for their playoff hopes to stay alive. Like Distrcit 5-2A, the boys still have three district games ahead of them and things can get really complex before Next Tuesday’s final district games. Technically Denver City sitting at last place in district can still get a chance at a possible playoff appearance. If Brownfield can win two of their last three games, their chances are much better at making the playoffs. We will see after tonight games what is to come.

Current rankings for the schools we cover: Girls in Class 1A, Ropes is #5; in Class 4A, Denver City is #5. Boys Class 1A Ropes is #17 and Meadow is #18.
