Golf Teams Compete in Regional Meet

Both the Fillie and Mustang golf teams recently returned from Abilene where they competed in the Regional Golf Tournament.

The Mustangs finished in 11th place and the Fillies finished in 14th place. The Mustangs went to Regionals as the district runner-up while the Fillies went as the district champion.

Senior Tristan McGary led the way for the Mustangs with rounds of 88 and 85 for an overall two-day score of 173 over a very tough Diamondback Golf Course. He finished in 22nd place out of 95 golfers.

Other Mustang scores included Hunter Sandlin with a 102/91 (193), John-Michael Davis shot a 101/104 (205), Ray Carrasco finished with a 112/101 (213), and Alexis Gonzales shot a 100/115 (215).

As a team the Mustangs had a first round total of 391 and a second round 381 for an overall score of 772.

Playing as a medalist was Riley Boyd who had a 109/96 (205). He was placed 2nd in the district competition and was able to move on since he was not a member of an advancing team.

“The course was a very challenging course and the boys had to play in very windy conditions,” Coach Mike Louis said. “They gave a great effort but finished in 11th position out of the 16 teams. This was an exciting, but humbling experience to play against great competition on such a difficult golf course. This group of boys have worked really hard this year and are typically at the course everyday working on their game. Their improvement has been significant, and they are a great group to be around.”

For the Fillies Syxx Yzaguirre had the low score of 113/106 (219). She was followed by Hailey Henderson 119/122 (241), Kelly Dougherty 135/115 (250), Naomi Gonzales 131/137 (268), and Erin English 144/137 (281).

As a team they finished with scores of 498/480 (978.

“It rained most of the evening starting late Tuesday night so the girls didn’t get to see all the of the course during their practice round do to an approaching storm and the next morning, under very wet conditions, was the first time our girls had seen the entire course,” Coach Louis continued. “The course was very demanding and required keeping the ball in the fairway, and even then, in the right place of the fairway so that you could avoid trees and hazards. Our girls gave a great effort but were overwhelmed by the difficulty of the course.

“I’m really proud of these girls – two of them were first year players, so to get to even go to regionals was a neat experience.  I was very happy that our two seniors – Syxx and Kelly – were able to end their high school golf season with this trip to Abilene. They have been great to have on the team. It was also good to have Erin come back and play this year after not playing last year.”

Assisting Coach Louis was Coach Terry Murphy.
