It was a great night for football in Brownfield. Pregame festivities got under way with the recognition of those that have served or are serving our country. After that our local first responders were introduced. Kamryn Cruz then sang God Bless America. Bobby Lawrence and Candy Cudd then presented the family of SGT Steven Morin Jr, who lost his life in Operation Desert Storm, with a football and a framed #66 jersey. The #66 will never be worn again in honor of SGT Morin.

After all the pregame festivities ended it was time for football. The Cubs won the toss and deferred to the second half. The first quarter was a strong defensive battle as it ended in a 0-0 tie.

The Cubs would draw first blood as they scored on a 29 yard screen pass from Brock Sires to Nunie Ramirez the extra point was no good, Cubs lead 6-0. Denver City would score on a 34 yard field goal by Nick Garza with about 3:00 left before half putting the score at 6-3 Cubs lead. That would be the score at the half

Coming out after the half Denver City and Cubs trade possessions back and forth before the Mustangs would tack on six with 6:32 left in the third on a three yard run by Alexis Gonzales. Mustangs would make the PAT and take a 10-6 lead.

The fourth quarter saw both teams trading possessions yet again before the Cubs regained the lead with 6:32 left in the game on a 30 yard touchdown pass from Sires to Malachi Garcia. Denver City would then march down the field to take a 16-12 lead after an Aaron Mendoza 11 yard touchdown run, the PAT was blocked.

The Cubs got the ball back and were marching down the field until a Sires interception off of a tipped ball. The Cubs would then force the Mustangs to punt giving them another opportunity with under three minutes left on the clock. The Cubs would get into the red zone but would come up short on a fourth down play.

Denver City would get the ball back with :10 seconds left on the clock and would take a knee to end the game and take a 16-12 victory over the Cubs to open district play.

Sires had 183 yards, went 20 of 35 on the night for two touchdowns and one interception. Garcia was the leading receiver with 97 yards and a touchdown. Chuy Garza led the Cubs rushing attack with 44 yards on 14 attempts. Hunter Cudd led the Cubs in talks with 11 on the night three being for a loss.

The Cubs will have an off week before making the drive to Perryton. As always will be there to bring you the game live as the Cubs look to rebound in district play.
