DCHS Literary Teams Capture First Place

The DCHS Literary teams traveled to Post on Wednesday to compete in the district meet and came home as district champions with a wide margin over second place Idalou.

Denver City accumulated 586 points compared to 424 Idalou had. In the process there will be 25 DCHS students advancing on to Regional in 30 slots on the campus of Abilene Christian University April 22-23.

In the Math/Science and Computer Science sponsored by Richie Cullins, in Calculator Applications Xabier Mendoza was 1st, Kelly Ann Dougherty was 2nd, Eduardo Hernandez was 3rd, and Katy Patterson was 4th. They finished in 1st place as a team and will all advance to Regions.

In Mathematics Karley David was 1st, Cole McLeroy was 2nd, and Katy Patterson was 5th. Along with Cristian Cortez they will all advance to Regionals as a team and individually.

In Number Sense Caitlin Williams was 1st, Cameron Garcia was 2nd, Cole McLeroy was 3rd, and Karley David was 5th. They will advance as a team.

For Science John Michael Davis was 1st, was Top in Physics and Gehrig Curtis was Top in Biology. They finished 2nd as a team and are eligible for a Wildcard spot in Regions.

In Computer Applications, sponsored by Tammy Bailey, Claire Seymour was 1st and Joel Palma was 3rd. Both were Regional qualifiers.

For Literary Criticism, sponsored by Carrie Conley, Mirella Yanez was 1st and a Regional qualifier and Katie Hollon was 6th.

In Ready Writing, sponsored by Laura Dees, Britney Dyck was 3rd and a Regional qualifier and Taylor Dial was 4th and is an alternate to Regionals.

In Social Science, sponsored by Stacie Decker Robles, Gehrig Curtis was 6th.

In the Journalism category, sponsored by Stacie Decker Robles, Lily Whaley was 1st in News Writing and a Regional qualifier, Kenzi Stephens was 2nd and a Regional qualifier, and Kaitlyn Stephens was 4th and will be a Regional alternate.

In Editorial Writing Lily Whaley was 1st and a Regional qualifier, Kenzi Stephens was 3rd and a Regional qualifier, and Kaitlin Stephens was 5th.

In Headline Writing Kenzi Stephens was 3rd and a Regional qualifier and Kaitlin Stephens was 4th and a Regional alternate.

The Journalism team finished in 1st place although they do not advance as a team but still have bragging rights.

In spelling, sponsored by Stacie Decker Robles, Hanna Gonzales was 1st and a Regional qualifier.

In Speech/Debate and Current Issues, sponsored by Sonya Gore, Erin English was 2nd in Current Events and is a Regional qualifier.

In Informative Speaking Marlow Davis was 2nd and a Regional qualifier, Josh Mills was 5th and Regan Calk was 6th.

For Lincoln-Douglas Debate Hudson Sanders was 1st and a Regional qualifier, Josh Mills was 3rd and a Regional qualifier, and Sierra Tovar was 4th an alternate.

In Persuasive Speaking Jacee Billings was 1st and a Regional qualifier, Robert Mendoza was 3rd and a Regional qualifier, and Erin English was 4th and an alternate.

For Poetry Interpretation Robert Mendoza was 1st and a Regional qualifier and Cheyenne Beach was 6th.

In Prose Interpretation Marlow Davis was 1st and a Regional qualifier.

Finishing behind Denver City and Idalou was Post with 219 points, Slaton had 113 points, Brownfield had 44 points, and Roosevelt finished with 27 points.
