For the second year in a row, the Mustangs will be entering Area play when they once again swept Perryton in straight games to earn the Bi-District championship trophy.
In game one the Mustangs jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one inning of play and made it stand for an 8-4 win. Game two was much the same as each team scored two runs in the first inning before the Mustangs went out in front with three runs in the second and then put the game away with four more in the sixth inning advancing with an 11-5 win and the sweep. The Mustangs also advanced to the Area round last year with an 8-2 and 7-5 win over this same Perryton team.
Uriel Rodriquez got things going in the first inning of game one with an inside the park home run on what started out looking like a single to centerfield. After the Perryton player, miss played the hit allowing it to go all the way to the fence Uriel never slowed down in rounding the bases. The Mustangs came up with three more runs in the same inning on a Daven Blanco double that brought in Luis Rodriquez and Irving Mijares who had reached base on a walk and double respectively. Daven later scored on a wild pitch to make it 4-1 after the first inning.
Single runs were scored in the second, third, fifth and sixth inning with some of those runs coming from three Perryton errors. Luis cleared the 420 mark in center field for a home run in the third inning. Uriel, Irving, and Daven led the Mustangs at the plate with two hits each. Braden McGary, Michael Garcia, and Spencer Marion all had one hit each. The Mustangs finished the game with 10 hits and no errors.
Braden’s hit was a triple in the second inning scoring Uriel from first. Braden was then tagged out at home trying to stretch it into a home run. Ferny picked up the win going four innings, giving up three runs on four hits, had seven strikeouts and issued two bases on balls. Braden picked up the save going the final three innings, giving up one run on three hits, striking out four and giving up one base on balls.
Game two started out much the same with the two teams knotted at 2-2 at the end of the first inning. The Mustangs came up with three runs in the top of the second to go up 5-2 and then added one more in the fourth to make it 6-2. Perryton cut that lead to 6-4 with two runs in their half of the fourth inning, but the Mustangs scored a single run in their half of the fifth and added four more in the top of the sixth inning to go up 11-4. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rangers came up with one more run for the final 11-5 score.
Braden and Michael led the way for the Mustangs with two hits each. Uriel, Luis, Irving, Daven, Ferny, and Ty Brumley all had one hit each. Braden collected the only extra base hit with a double in the top of the fourth inning which scored Uriel who had reached base when he was hit and then advanced to second on a passed ball. The Mustangs took advantage of five Perryton errors to score six unearned runs.
Luis started on the mound for the Mustangs giving up four runs on four hits, had eight strikeouts, and walked five. Daven went the final three innings for the save. He gave up one run on four hits, had three strikeouts and one base on balls.
The Mustangs will next take on District 3 winner Pecos in a two of three series starting on Friday at 2:30 pm at Odessa Permian Panthers field. Game two will be at 10:30 am on Saturday also at Permian. If a game three is needed it will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the game two.
