Seminole continues efforts to stabilize area

An oil well blowout in Seminole is affecting many Gaines County residents who have been evacuated from their homes.

The Red Cross has activated and is setting up at the former Seminole Junior High School gym, which is located at the intersection of S.W. Ave. B.

According to reports, an injection well operated by Tabula Rasa, LLC blew out causing about 500 Gaines County residents to be displaced from their homes as the well is reported to be leaking hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S).

H2S is a colorless gas, which occurs naturally and is extremely flammable. According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

While U.S. Hwy. 180 (Lamesa Hwy) was blocked off from County Road 105 to Farm to Market Road 1429, the only road remaining closed to the public are CR 109
CR 107
CR 107-I, according to the Gaines County Emergency Management.

According to officials at the Seagraves Police Department, no Gaines County evacuees have been moved into the area, and no health concerns have been reported.
