This week’s TownTalk Sports Athletes of the Week has a familiar face and a comeback story.

Senior Gracen Keys of Wellman-Union is no stranger to athletics and local sports. Although Gracen has been a huge help for the Lady Cats, the past few years Gracen has had to fight injuries and persevere through those tough times. As one of the best Cross Country runners and Trackster in this region, she knows the competition and what she needs to do to excel. She did just that on Saturday winning the Plains Invitational Cross Country Meet. Last season Gracen didn’t even get to darken a cross country meet because of an injury and wasn’t sure if she would’ve been 100% when track season began. Of course, she broke all odds and punched her ticket to State in the 800-meter run (1/2 mile) and the 1600 meter run (mile) taking 7th in the 800 and getting the bronze in the 1600. This past Saturday, Gracen helped catapult her Wellman-Union Lady Cats Cross Country team to first place in the Plains Invitational. Congratulations to Gracen Keys for being the TownTalk Sports Female Athlete of the Week.

The Plains Cowboys took a punch to the chin with a 63-15 loss to Tahoka in week one of football. After a long week of practice and adjustments, the Cowboys were sure hoping to improve coming into the second week game against Smyer. With being down 12-0, a comeback was needed and Senior Austin Ward helped his team to come back and complete their first win in overtime. After the first score from the defense of Plains, Austin began to roll. Austin ran 58 yards for the Cowboys second TD bring the score 18-14 Smyer. As the Cowboys were back on offense, the Smyer defense took advantage of the Cowboys field position and got a safety bringing the score 20-14 Smyer. Late in the 4th, Austin Ward took to the air and landed a pass to Jonathan Medrano for a 74 yard TD. The PAT was no good tying the score 20-20. Into overtime, Smyer had the ball first and could not capitalize. As Plains took over on the 25, Austin kept the ball for an end around to the right to get the 25 yard  TD and the Cowboys winning in overtime 26-20. Congratulations to Austin Ward for being the TownTalk Radio Sports Male Athlete of the Week.
