A Warm Storytime at Yoakum County Library in Plains

winter books“Hats, Mittens, and Scarves” was the theme for the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, even though it felt more like spring outside.

The time together started with an overview of the crazy weather. The children enjoyed participating in the “Ten Little Snowflakes” song. “A Hat for Minerva Louise” was the first book read and the children took pleasure in pointing out all the wrong items Minerva was trying to dress in. They giggled at the humorous chicken’s solutions battling the cold. A fun movement song, “Snowkey Pokey,” was next and then a mitten-matching game.

Two new books “Bunny Slopes” and “Little Penguins” followed, helping us to identify winter clothes like scarves, mittens, and boots. The last book shared was “Lost. Found.” where the young audience made predictions about Bear’s red scarf.

The group ended the time with the discussion of the U.S. and Texas flags and pledges. A Scholastic classic-book video was shown: “A Snowy Day” by Ezra Jack Keats. The paperback book “I Know a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow” was the door prize and was won by Selah Blessing.

Those in attendance were Hope, Lanie, Abigail, Rhea, AriyelMoriahJazmineRylee, Payton, Tabitha, Selah, Kefira, Elijah, Gabe, Aspen, Brit, Sofia, and Tirzah.

The family StoryTime welcomes kids of all ages every Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. during the regular school year. Next week’s meeting on Wednesday, January 18, the Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Southern Ogallala Conservation District will be presenting a water conservation program to the group. Please attend this special event geared toward educating young children about the precious resource of water (and has a snow theme!).
