Last night in Canyon Texas, the Lady Cats Volleyball team of Wellman-Union took on the Ft. Elliot Lady Cougars in a Region 1-1A Bi-District Showdown. The Lady Cats came out clawing against the Lady Cougars and brought home the Bi-District trophy in a three set sweep.

The first two sets proved to be overwhelming for the Lady Cougars as Wellman-Union got out to early leads in both sets and Ft. Elliot could not handle a comeback. The third set was a bit different as the Lady Cougars took about a four point lead early in the third set. However, the Lady Cats took control about mid-way through the set and didn’t look back.

The three set sweep lasted about an hour and this was Wellman-Unions first playoff win in volleyball. Coach Robbin Tells said, “we went into the playoffs last year and got beat in five (sets), so this feels really good.”

Senior Micah Huff stepped up huge last night as her serves were making points. Many times through the sets she landed the ball right where it confused the Lady Cougars. Coach Tells was really proud of Huff saying, “She stepped up and was a senior for us.” Also another key player of the night was Jacy Rowden. Rowden had several kill shots and defensive moves by the net to help score points. Coach Tells said, “she is one our biggest hitters, so shes pretty important, especially in the middle.”

One thing that did leave an impression on Coach Tells was the unity and intensity that’s was played on the court.  Their last district game that was played against Plains proved not good for the Lady Cats.  Coach Tells explained, “we kinda struggled playing Plains in our last game in district, because we didn’t play as a team.” Coach Tells also said, “their goal was to play together and their quote for the week was “Show up and not show off”

The Lady Cats will take on the Lady Shorthorns of Marfa for a Region 1-1A Area match-up on Thursday November 2nd in Monahans TX in the Jerry Larned Sports Complex at 5:00 PM. will be broadcasting the game live on
