Storytime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains included a mock Thanksgiving Feast on Wednesday, November 18 and started with an overview of the month of November and a Countdown to Turkey.

The children also sang the “Days of the Week” song.

The United States and Texas flags were discussed and honored with pledges. To get active, the entire group energetically sang “If You’re Thankful and You Know It,” and “Turkey Lurkey” (a Thanksgiving rendition of “Hokey Pokey”).

The book “Thanks for Thanksgiving, enhanced the level of gratitude among the youngsters while discussing a variety of people and situations. Two of the library’s storytellers teamed up to share “10 Turkeys in the Road,” which is a numeric and comical read.

Once a month, Storytime welcomes a science experiment as well as a Texas State Symbol enhancement to the reading time. The state fiber and plant were examined in-depth and hands-on with a true specimen. The children each received their very own cotton boll and dug out the “fuzzy seed” with fervor.

Head Librarian, Pat McNabb, presented the polymer and pencil experiment, the group watched with anticipation and learned the strength of polymer bonds.

In attendance were Ella and Case Bearden, Jadon and Nathan McAdams, Ethan Moya, Ben and Gershom McAdams and Johan Neudorf. Weekly, the children’s names are added to a book drawing list. The winners for the month of November were Johan Neudorf, who won “Miss Nelson Has a Field Day” and Ella Bearden, who won “Eating the Alphabet.”

The fun time ended with a short Thanksgiving episode of Nickelodeon’s “Max and Ruby,” as well as a special eating event. Samples of the (modified) pilgrim-feast foods included a variety of dried fruits, gingersnap cookies, and chocolate chip pumpkin mini muffins.

Children of all ages are encouraged to attend Storytime with their caregivers. The group meets every Wednesday at 10:00 am during the school year. However, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the next Storytime will be on Wednesday, December 2.
