Another Christmas-themed Storytime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains was an energetic success on Wednesday, Dec. 9. After counting down the number of days until Christmas, the “Days of the Week” song and pledges to the United States and Texas flags were said.

The children chose a jingle bells rattle stick and enthusiastically sang “Jingle Bells.” Thomas Kincade’s book “Away in a Manger” was sung by caregivers as the children admired the artist’s pictures.

Head librarian Pat McNabb then led the children in a science experiment called “Disappearing Soda” using Coca-Cola and milk. All ages enjoyed learning about phosphoric acid molecules! She then taught the group about the state’s small flying mammal, the Mexican Free-tail Bat. One interesting fact is that bat babies are called “pups.” After the science fun had subsided, the youngsters gathered for “Mortimer’s Manger” and “Merry Christmas, Ollie!”. Those in attendance were Nathan McAdams, Johan Neudorf, Jordy Bell, Case and Ella Bearden, Ethan Moya, Penny Landry, and Kynlee Martin.

The short film called “Toy Tinkers” elicited giggles and laughs from all! As the group disbanded, the children were able to retrieve their previously-painted ornaments from the lighted stacked-book tree. The month of December is special because there are door prize drawings weekly instead of monthly. Ella Bearden was the winner of the door prize book giveaway, “Holiday Christmas.” The children were sent home with color sheets of a bat, manger, and stocking.

Children of all ages are encouraged to attend Storytime with their caregivers. The group meets every Wednesday at 10:00 am during the school year. On Wednesday, December 16, Santa will be stopping in for a quick visit and pictures. The group will also celebrate Christmas with a party.
