With a special StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, ten children gathered to commemorate the American Library Association’s national campaign to promote libraries, as well as the 20th year of an initiative called “El Dia de los Ninos/El Dia de los Libros,” also known as “Children’s Day/Book Day.” Those in attendance were Jordy Bell, Gershom & Ben McAdams, Johan Neudorf, Knox & Lathe Corn, Nathan McAdams, Daneka & Brailyne Cordova, and Ethan Moya.

The group’s routine opening began with a discussion on the calendar, including counting as well as weather. “Days of the Week” song was loud and fun! The pledges to the American and Texas flags were patriotic. The youngsters then sang “The Wheels on the Bus” in preparation for the award-winning book, “Last Stop on Market Street.” The book was the 2016 Newberry Medal winner, as well as receiving the Caldecott Honor and the Coretta Scott King Honor Award.

A new song was introduced that is sure to be a favorite: “Baby Shark!” The book to accompany this super-crazy-fun song was “Never Take a Shark to the Dentist (and Other Things Not to Do),” which was humorous and enjoyable to all. The last song was a spin-off of the first song. “The Dinos in the Swamp” was partnered with dinosaur cutouts and color boards in this participatory song selection. The book that completed the time was a creative story titled “No T-Rex in the Library.” The library theme continued with the video episode of Curious George called “Book Monkey,” in which the children learned how books are organized in the library. The motion rhyme “Wave Goodbye” completed the time together. A special packet of reading information was given to caregivers, as well as a pencil and snack to children.

The StoryTime group meets weekly on Wednesdays at 10 AM at the Yoakum County Library in Plains. All are welcome to attend. In two weeks, SandyLand Water Conservation District will lead a special StoryTime program so mark your calendars now for that memorable event!
