Mothers Day 2016

Although it was the eve of Cinco de Mayo, Yoakum County Library Plains was set to celebrate moms and all mother-figures on Wednesday, May 4, 2016. The excited group of youngsters included Ethan Moya, Ella & Case Bearden, Jordy Bell, Gershom McAdams, Ian DelaRosa, Ethan Garcia and Nathan McAdams. After discussing the weather and calendar, the pledges to the American and Texas flags completed opening ceremonies.

With the bouncy youngsters already hyped, the first song was “Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed.” Sticking with the monkey theme, the alligator (aka “crocadiller”) and monkey puppets came out to play. A barrage of giggles accompanied the song “Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree!” The last song was also very active: “Ring around the Rosey.”

Beginning the read-aloud time was Bill Martin’s “Baby Bear, Baby Bear, What Do You See?” The next two books focused solely on the upcoming Mother’s Day celebration: “Special Day for Mommy” and “Mommy’s Best Kisses.” The last book was a favorite by Jane Yolen, “How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You?” A short Scholastic Books video was shown: “Is Your Mama a Llama?” followed by the “Wave Goodbye” chant. The group took home their flower handprint artwork as well as multiple coloring sheets.

StoryTime is open to children of all ages, from birth on up. This weekly program will enhance language skills through a variety of senses and engage children in a lifetime of literacy. According to the American Library Association & American Academy of Pediatrics (Aug 2014 publication), 5 out of 5 pediatricians agree that reading aloud to children supports healthy brain development. Come join the StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesdays at 10am. The last program for this school year will be on May 18.
