by Eric

The candidates for the May 5th municipal elections are set and although we are geared up for the primary elections, which early voting has begun, we don’t need to lose sight of the municipal elections coming up on May 5th, 2018.  According to the Terry County Elections Office all positions that are up for election have been filed for. There will be three contested races which include two school districts,  and a mayors office.

There were only two Trustee-At Large seats open for Brownfield ISD and only two people filed for those positions. Catarino (Cat) Gonzalez and William Hawkins will be the only two on the ballot. Meadow ISD and Wellman-Union ISD will both have contested school board races.

Meadow ISD has three Board Member positions open, with four who filed to run. They are Daniel Harrington, Chris Smith, Ruben Villapando and Jody Woodard. The top three who gets the most votes are seated as the new board members for Meadow ISD. Wellman-Union ISD is in similar spot. WUISD has two Trustee-At Large openings and three who have filed to run. Ryan Dill, Jace Moore and Gabe Neill all threw their hats in and the two with the most votes will get a place at the board table.

Moving on to the Brownfield Regional Medical Center Board positions, there are three positions open with three candidates. June Cooper, Brian Paiva and Richard Van Der Vlist all three have filed for those positions. In the South Plains Underground Water Conservation District, precinct 2 and 4 are open and both precincts will be uncontested as well. Matt Hogue will be on the ballot for Director-Precinct 2 and Barrett Brown Director-Precicnt 4.

In the cities of Meadow and Wellman, all city elections are uncontested.   The City of Meadow has four elected positions open and are all uncontested. Natalie Howard: Mayor, Mariana Moya: Council Member – Unexpired Term, Jerry Liles: Council Member – At Large and Ignacio Sanchez: Council Member – At Large. Wellman city elections have three Council Member places open and also uncontested. Lynn Delong: Place 1, Naomi Garnsey: Place 2 and Cody Griffiths: Place 5.

In City of Brownfield the mayor position and council members districts 1,2 and 3 are on the ballot and the council member position are uncontested. These three will be the only candidates on the ballot for their respective district. Ricky Rocha: Council Member – Dist. 1, Mary Valdonado: Council Member – Dist. 2 and Judy Besler: Council Member – Dist. 3.  Moving on to the mayors race, there are two candidates vying for this position. Geronimo M. Gonzalez and Leon Pope. Pope currently resides as an At-Large Council Member. If Pope is to win the mayor’s race, then the council will appoint someone to take that position on the council. If Pope does not win the mayor’s seat, he will then stay on the city council as a At-Large Council Member.

Don’t forget to vote and let your voice be heard!
