StoryTime at the Yoakum County Library in Plains was maxed out in fun on Wednesday, March 2. The special hour honored of Dr. Seuss’ 112th birthday as it participated in the “Read Across America” campaign.

As the children trickled in, they enjoyed a game of Pin the Eggs on the Plate (similar to Pin the Tail but with green eggs). The large group then talked about the new month on the calendar, as well as the special holidays in March, followed by singing “Days of the Week.” Those in attendance were: Aries Jasso; Case & Ella Bearden; Nathan McAdams; Knox & Lathe Corn; Ethan Garcia; Ian DeLaRosa; Karleigh & Brody McDonald; Abigale, Elijah, Ben, & Brit McAdams; Johan Neudorf; Ethan Moya; Ariah, Andi, & Avery Coronado.

To promote reading, the group enjoyed a special visitor, Bess the dog, to “speak” to them on the importance of books and her love of literature. The youngsters then grabbed a Dr. Seuss book to pose for a photo with Bess and giggles abounded.

Following the tail-wagging excitement, head librarian (and mama to Bess). Pat McNabb brought to life a science lesson on connectivity. Just as “Read Across America” takes place every year around Dr. Seuss’ birthday, Plains is linking with other cities all over the nation who are sharing in the joy of reading. Furthermore, books unite readers of all ages to a world of limitless possibilities. To demonstrate connectivity, these youngsters made a human circuit by linking hands and using an energy stick that would light up when the current was complete. Each person was crucial in the circle – “a person’s a person, no matter how small” (Dr. Seuss in Horton Hears a Who).

A reading of “What Pet Should I Get” led to each individual sharing their pet preference. Dr. Seuss—and Bess—would have supported the general consensus of a dog. The group then moved to do a tissue-paper craft of the Cat in the Hat paper plate mask. Following a successful picture of the masked (human) felines, the children excitedly welcomed a piece of birthday cake. The ornate, pecan-flavored cake was designed and decorated by a long-time friend of the library, Pat Powers of Lubbock. A short clip called Lost Egg of PBS’s “The Cat in the Hat Knows a lot about That” was shown while the youngsters ate the delicious treat. The group then interacted with the good-bye rhyme and exited with bookmarks and coloring pages.

StoryTime is open to kids of all ages and their caregivers, meeting weekly at the Yoakum County Library in Plains on Wednesdays at 10 am during the regular school year. There will not be any StoryTime on Wednesday, March 16 due to Spring Break.
