The Lady Cubs took the court with a 11-1 record Tuesday night at the PIT with a new #6 ranking. On the other side was the #5 ranked 12-1 Tigerettes of Slaton. It was opening night for the district with Idalou, Littlfield and Shallowater also ranked in the top 25. No doubt this will be one of the toughest districts in the state.
The Lady Cubs started the game on fire with Tia Johnson scoring six of the Lady Cubs first nine points before the Tigerettes got on the board. The Lady Cubs were out rebounding the Tigerettes early on and taking advantage of turnovers giving them a 15-7 lead after the 1st quarter.
The Tigerettes were not going down easy however. They took advantage of missed free throws from the Lady Cubs and early foul trouble for three of the starters. The Tigerettes scored ten in the quarter while the Lady Cubs could only put up nine. By halftime the Tigerettes pulled within six of the Lady Cubs 24-17.
The Lady Cubs hit the ground running in the 3rd quarter and never looked back scoring eight unanswered points, eventually putting up 19 in the third, eight of those from post Deja Johnson. The Tigerettes put up ten and fell behind 43-27.
The Lady Cubs defense took over only allowing six points in the 4th quarter. The defense forced multiple turnovers and out rebounded the Tigerettes 37-12 for the game. In the end it was a huge victory for the Lady Cubs with a final score of 50-33 improving their record overall to 12-1 and 1-0 in district play. Stat leaders for the game were Dabria Blackwell with 13 points and 3 rebounds followed by Gabi Fields with 12 points 7 rebounds. Tia Johnson finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds and Deja Johnson had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Lindsey Herrera also pitched in with 6 points and 2 rebound while Morgan Silva had 2 points and 5 rebounds for the game.
