Ag Food Processing class proves to be fun and educational

Brownfield High School Ag Teacher Sheldon Franks has a great new class for BHS students. They are loving it and they are learning at the same time.

Food Processing class teaches the students exactly where their food comes from and the path it took to get into their hands. A lesson we all need to learn. So many people, especially in urban areas, are so disconnected from the origin of their food. Mr. Franks class teaches these students to be good consumers and understand where the food on their plate came from and the costs involved with it getting from the farm to the table.

Another part of this class is cooking. Mr. Franks is also teaching a little outdoor cooking to go along with the other things learned in this class.

There is a “disco” set up outside the ag shop. A “disco” is kind of like a wok in its shape, perhaps not as deep. This disco is placed on top of a butane burner and virtually anything can be cooked on it. There may be other names associated with this cooking device, but locally, disco is most recognizable.

On the day TownTalk Media was invited into class, burritos were going to be cooked on the disco. Students were responsible for bringing the necessary items and also knowing where the food items came from. Locally sourced sausage and eggs were used, as well locally made tortillas and salsa.

It was fun and every student asked could answer all the questions about what they had learned in preparation for this day of cooking.

Gabi stated, “I am loving learning to cook different things.”

Tristen stated, “We are learning where our food comes from and how that whole process works.”

Jose stated, “I like that we get to eat a lot, but we are also learning how to use seasonings to make things taste right.”

Just another great way BISD is teaching kids and allowing them to have fun while learning!
