It is now 2019 and time for most UIL districts to begin district play this Friday. Of course, some districts that have eight or more teams have already begun district play but nothing is set in stone quite yet.

After not winning a single district game last season, the Lady Cubs have come out swinging this year. Already 3-1 in district play and tied for the second place spot and looks to upset a #7 Shallowater Fillie team that just won the Fiber Max Caprock Classic Holiday Tournament. It will not be easy especially now that one of the key players for the Lady Cubs will be out for at least six weeks with an injury. Shallowater will obviously be a huge test for the Lady Cubs, however, maybe the team will step up through the rest of district season. Look for the Lady Cubs going 3-2 tonight.

If there ever be a time when two teams collide with a lot on the line, it would be when the #12 Brownfield Cubs meet up with the #10 Shallowater Mustangs in a key District 2-3A matchup. Both teams have experience, not just returning, but winning. Both teams are similar with their records, the Cubs 10-4, and Shallowater 11-5. Both teams have a history with basketball and some people would think that both schools are “basketball schools.” This game should be packed to the rim, no pun intended, with a loud and rowdy crowd. This game will come down to a turnover or two and free throws. The Cubs want to make some noise and mounting a comeback with a 25 point deficit to Littlefield on Dec. 21st to win 46-41, they should be in great shape to take on Shallowater. Brownfield will send Shallowater back to northwest Lubbock County with a loss.

The #20 Denver City Fillies will take on another top-rated opponent of the #3 Idalou Lady Cats. The Fillies left the Littlefield Wildcat Classic Tournament as the champions and they feel on top of the world right now. Don’t forget that they also took on the #7 Shallowater Fillies to two overtimes and fell by three points. The Fillies have a great opportunity to shake things up in district with a win over the Lady Cats. They know how to win and with team members like Holly Hemmeline they are sure to win this time. The Fillies will move up in the polls next Monday as Idalou will fall.

It’s time that the Denver City Mustangs get back to their winning ways. The Mustangs have not done well this season. Already 0-2 in district and 7-7 overall and they are coming off a bad showing at the Littlefield Wildcat Classic Tournament, they are hanging on a thread to not lose hope in the rest of this season. This could be their turn-around game against Idalou. The Wildcats are in similar shape as the Mustangs, however, DC is more hungry for a win.

Moving on to 2A, the Plains Cowgirls will begin their district season tonight as well when they take on Smyer. The Cowgirls have done well thus far in the season and look to bounce back into the playoffs and going far. Tonight’s game will tell a story of how tough district is because both teams have lost and beat some of the same teams with about the same point margins. The Cowgirls are on the road, but can really make a statement tonight with a win. Plains will travel back home 1-0 in district.

Seagraves gets to stay home with their district opener against Tahoka. This will be another game that should be close. The Lady Eagles are having a rough time getting their footing back and tonight’s task should be a bit easier. The Lady Bulldogs have only won one game and their losses have not been close. Both teams come off a decent 2017-2018 season but are not capitalizing on their experience this season. Seagraves will share a 1-0 district record with Plains after tonight’s game.

When UIL brought District 7-1A together it was somewhat good. Well at least for Ropes. The other four teams Loop, Meadow, O’Donnell, and Wellman-Union will fight for the second and third spot. Most likely that will be Meadow and WU, which brings us to tonight’s game between the Lady Broncos and the WU Lady Cats. There’s nothing like an inner-county rivalry to begin district play. The Lady Broncos will fight hard, especially with Zoe Hunt as their lead player. Hunt does not quit and will be a thorn in the side of the Lady Cats tonight. However, WU is coming off some good basketball play and they are healthy. With the four of the five starters coming back from last season there is a lot of experience. Look for the Lady Cats to drive for the second place spot in District 7-1A and it will begin tonight.

NOTE: The Ropes Lady Eagles will not have a district game tonight because Dawson was unable to field a team this season and Greenwood will begin distirct next week because they are in a five-team district.

All games will be broadcast live on or the TownTalk App. You can also hear the Denver City, Plains, Seagraves, & Tahoka on their sports apps.
