Brownfield Education Center held graduation on Thursday, January 23rd for 15 graduates. The BEC is a program which enables students to obtain the necessary credits for graduation in a non-traditional setting. This includes some who have dropped out, or who have jobs, or others for whom the traditional setting just wasn’t working for them. Chris Edwards is the Principal of this school and does a great job with his students.
The students graduating were: Gevin Gibson, Angel Rojas, Collin Clare, Tyler Underwood, Dominic Nerios, Felicia Morin, Khrysten River, Larrissa Perez, Cyndee Herrera, Matthew Casillas, Enrique Estrada III, Adrian Garcia, Logan Cox, and Joe Garcia, Jr. Esmeralda Castro also went through graduation with them. Esmeralda was set to graduate in 2000, but was not able to due to TAAS testing requirements. Because of a program through Texas Education Agency, Esmeralda was awarded her diploma and was finally able to walk the stage. This program was only opened up for one year.
BEC has been a great program for BISD, enabling so many students the opportunity to graduate and go on to live successful lives. This program was begun in 2009. It is estimated to have graduated around 300 students since its beginning. Graduation ceremonies are held twice a year.
BISD Superintendent Chris Smith stated, “Graduation is always a celebration for BISD. We are proud of our BEC graduates and they are part of our BISD family. It is a great testament to the determination of our students and their families to see these students graduate. We wish them all well.”
Smith pronounced the students as graduates and members of the School Board handed out diplomas.
