Services for Betty Askew will be held 10:30AM Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Terry County Memorial Cemetery under the direction of the Brownfield Funeral Home.

Betty Lois Smith Askew was born April 22, 1931 in Mitchell Co, TX and passed May 29, 2020 in Lubbock, TX.

Betty was born in Mitchell County, TX, to parents D.R. and Frankie Smith. She joined her older brother, Bob at their family home. Brother Charles Ray and Ruby Joyce joined the family at a later date.

D.R. moved the family to Hockley Co. to share crop farm and later to the Needmore home place. Betty graduated Brownfield High School in 1948. She attended Draughn’s business school and had a job with a CPA prior to marriage.

Betty was introduced to R.B. Askew by friends and they married April 4, 1951 in Lovington, NM. Three children were born to R.B. and Betty; Ronnie, Eddie, and Tresa. Betty and R.B. had 20 years together before R.B. died in an accident in 1971.

Betty had been a farmer’s wife for 20 years and suddenly had to take care of a farm, a cotton gin and hope her children were strong enough to finish raising themselves. They were. As her children grew into adulthood, married and had children of their own, she loved her grandchildren with her whole heart. Nothing was out of her price range if one of the grandchildren wanted or needed something.

Betty became a successful artist and had her own business know as “Blooms by Betty”. She loved the friendships from belonging to the Brownfield Art Association. Many family and friends still own her work. Her other great passion was her flower garden in her yard. She spent countless hours in the yard.

Betty attended church at the Church of Christ her entire life. She enjoyed the fellowship of her church family and friends she had there.

The last years of Betty’s life, she struggled to hang on to her identity as the Alzheimer’s took over her mind. She never lost her sharp wit and comebacks with staff at the nursing home, doctors, and family.
