Betty Bomar Self (1927-2018)

Memorial services for Betty Bomar Self, 91, will be held Friday, October 5, 2018, at 11:00 A.M. in the Denver City Church of Christ with Brother Skip Rodgers officiating, Services will be under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Denver City.

Betty Bomar Self passed away in Midland, Texas, where she was a resident of Cimarron Place Assisted Living at the time of her death.  She was born on April 17, 1927, in Ft. Worth, to Ruby Spears Bomar and Robert Lowrance Bomar.  The family soon moved to Amarillo and lived there until 1940, when they moved to Lubbock. She graduated from Lubbock High School in 1944, then attended and graduated from Texas Tech College.  Betty was a member of Las Chaparritas which later became Kappa Kappa Gamma and an active member of several academic and honorary organizations.  In the fall of 1946, she met Robert Edgar Self and they married on May 30, 1947, beginning 61 years together.  They continued their studies until they both graduated, she in 1948 and he in 1949. At that time they moved to Brownfield where Edgar began his 45-year association with Collins Dept Stores. Their daughter Judy Lynn and son Jackie were born while they lived there.  In 1955 they moved to Denver City to open another Collins.  Betty was a homemaker until her children were older and then helped when needed at the store.  Betty was a long- time member of the Denver City Church of Christ where she taught Bible classes for elementary to ladies classes for many years.

She taught Luebach-literacy courses, and she and others helped organize the volunteer Meals on Wheels in Denver City which is still active.  On Edgar’s retirement in 1990, they enjoyed lake trips and traveling in their motor home. Betty was an avid reader, did needlepoint, played bridge, enjoyed gardening and enjoyed her friends and life in Denver City.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edgar of 61 years, two brothers Jerry Bomar of Mineral Wells, Charles Bomar of Austin; sister-in-law Laura Bomar.

Betty is survived by her daughter Judy Lynn of Denver City, her son Jackie of Midland; a sister in law Martha Bomar of Mineral Wells; several much- loved nieces and nephews: Mike Bomar, Christie Nalle, Ann Ferguson, Pat May and Clay Bomar; cousins: Sherry Don Reid and Martin Benson. The family gives special thanks for long- time friend Vera Bennett.
