Yesterday on a cold blustery misty day, the Brownfield Cubs Track program sent several athletes to compete in the Area Track meet in Denver City and five of them advanced to the Region I-3A Track Meet.
The first competitor to advance was Meriah Gonzalez in the triple jump. here regional qualifying jump was 33 feet and 10 inches. Head Track Coach Taheric Brantley said, “First off Meriah Gonzalez shocked everybody by getting second in the triple jump with a season best 33’10” jump! A foot and a half further than district. She came into the meet ranked 7th.”
Next to move on to regionals was Nathaniel Luna in the 100m dash where he became the Area Champion with time of 11.02 seconds. “Nathaniel Luna did exactly what was expected. He is the 100 meter dash area champion with a time of 11.02 seconds. He is getting very close to the school record of 10.96.” Coach Brantley said. On top of Luna qualifying for regionals in the 100m dash, he also will be heading in the 200m dash earning the Area Runner-Up position. Coach Brantley continued saying, “He also qualified for the 200 in a time of 22.8, which was second overall. Nathaniel has a decent shot at state. He needs a great week of practice, focus and intensity.”
Also fellow Cub Zavier (Zavy) Garcia finished 3rd in the 200m dash and has qualified for the regional track meet. “Also Zavier Garcia really rose to the occasion in the 200 meter dash. He was a long shot to make it out but ended up getting third. The grit and determination he carries really shined through with that performance.” said Coach Brantley.
Next BHS athlete moving on to regionals is Ruth Lazano where she ran the 400m dash and earned the Area Championship. Her time in the 400m dash 62.45 seconds. According to her coaches, she sat at number one in Area on time. Coach Brantley stated, “Ruth Lozano was our champion in the 400 meter dash. Blew away the competition, nobody was close. She has a great chance to make finals at regionals.”
The final person qualifying for regionals is Isidora Garcia. She will compete in the 1600m (Mile) run. “Isidora Garcia qualified for regionals in the mile run. She is just a freshman and has a really bright future.” stated Coach Brantley.
Coach Brantley was really proud of the track and field athletes and said, “I was really impressed with some of the performances we had in the area meet and we are looking forward to continued success next week.” These five will travel down to Abilene where they will take on other schools in the Region I-3A Track Meet. It will be held at Abilene Christian University on Thursday – Friday April 23-24, 2021. Times of events TBA.
