The BISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Monday night to approve the Administration’s recommendation of a mask plan going forward. BISD’s official statement follows:
“Masks shall continue to be worn in BISD until April 11th.
“If the regional and BISD numbers remain low, then masks shall become optional on April 12th. BISD will always encourage mask wearing throughout the district. BISD will also continue to follow ALL other COVID 19 protocols; including social distancing, use of dividers, and regular and ongoing sanitation. While masks will be optional if numbers stay low please be advised that any student that does not wear a mask and has exposure to someone with COVID, they will be forced to quarantine for up to 10 days.
“Over the next few weeks we will work on providing all the necessary information to you all so that you can make an informed decision on whether or not you wish to allow your student to opt out of mask wearing. BISD will not expand virtual offerings and only students who have been virtual thus far, will be allowed to stay virtual.
“Please continue to send your student to school with a mask until April 11th.”
TownTalk Media will continue to monitor this for changes.
The Board also approved the cancellation of the School Board Election scheduled for May, due to the two candidates are running unopposed. Will Hawkins and Cat Gonzalez were both certified as duly elected as a result of being unopposed.
The Board approved the Application for Missed School Days Waiver for February 16-19. These days were missed due to the freezing weather and potential for loss of power during that week. The District has extra minutes built in to the calendar, but the approval of this waiver will give the district more flexibility with days going forward, should more days need to be missed.
The Board also approved various expenditures related to the new High School and the renovation of the current High School in preparation for Middle School:
Approved was a Paving Project at the current High School and the Administration Building in the total amount of $398,833.99. This will be a State Highway grade paving material.
Approved was a roofing project at the current High School and Oak Grove. At the current High School this project will be primarily on the Vocational Wing and on the current Training Center which will be transitioning into the BMS Field House. The total amount of this roofing project. will be $454,400.
Approved was the purchase of new Cosmetology Equipment to update the Cosmetology Department at the new High School. The old equipment will be sold. The actual amount is $73,594 with a $6,405.40 for overages if needed.
Approved was the flooring proposal for the current High School. BISD is working to update the flooring throughout before a move is made into this building in the fall. The cost is to be determined.
Approved was a furniture GMP for current High School and new High School. BISD is working to replace furniture at the current High School and to furnish the new High School, including student, teacher, library, commons, and specialty furniture. The current GMP amount is $1.24 million but will change between the start and end of the project.
Approved was the window replacement project at Colonial Heights. BISD is working to complete window replacement project at CH prior to the start of school in the fall, at which time Bright Beginnings will be moving into the CH building. The approved amount for this project was $409,783.
The board also approved the hiring of a new Band Director for BISD. William Burks is currently the Director of Bands at Levelland ISD. He is Administrator certified. He has been directing bands since 1985 and has served at many schools, including Post, Dumas, Lubbock High, and Levelland. He has also served in Administrator positions and comes highly recommended to BISD. “We know that Mr. Burks is the type of person and has the personality to direct the Spirit of the Plains Band, and lead our band in the direction it needs to go. This is really a home-run hire for us,” stated BISD Superintendent Chris Smith.
Also hired was a new Offensive Coordinator for Cub Football. Hired was Holden Seward. Seward has been coaching at Burnet CISD. He has four years of experience. Athletic Director Aarrhon Flores stated, “We feel that this will be a good hire for our district. He is a great coach and we are excited to have him on our staff.” Seward will also be teaching high school P.E. Classes.
Student and Employees of the Month were also recognized by the Board.
Student of the Month – Kami Rodriguez – BMS
Employee of the Month BMS – Mason England
Employee of the Month BHS – Michelle Wyatt
Employee of the Month BEC – Jacob Franco
Employee of the Month Oak Grove – Melissa Salas
Employee of the Month BBAC – Emily Licon
In the Superintendent’s Report, Smith did state that the new BHS Gym completion date was being pushed back. Volleyball will start their season in the current High School Gym, but the new Gym could be completed prior to the season ending. “Academics should be ready for the fall in the new High School. Worst case scenario is that we will begin classes in the fall with our High School students actually starting the year in the old BMS building. That way, we only have to move one set of students when the building is complete. But, again, this is a worst case scenario situation.”
Smith stated that he had spoken with someone who could possibly sponsor the Championship rings for the Lady Cubs. “It is a business that has reached out to us. That is about a $15,000 deal. So, we are working on that.”
Speaking of the Lady Cubs State Championship, Smith stated, “This was more than just a State Championship for our girls. The ladies represented our school and our community in such an amazing way. I have had phone calls and texts about how impressive they were even off the court. This will go a long way in showing people what BISD is really about. We are grateful to these ladies and their coaches for the way they did represent us.”
All Board members were present, with the exception of Cat Gonzalez who was working due to the high winds during the meeting.
The next regularly scheduled meeting of the BISD Board of Trustees will be Monday, April 19 in the Board Room of the BISD Administration Building.
