In other business, a presentation was given by Gifted and Talented Coordinator Susan Brisendine. Mrs. Brisendine had her BMS GT students with her. The group did a presentation on the work they have been doing developing a Christmas Light Show for the district. The students have learned about wiring, timing, props and other things having to do with developing a program such as this. Each student gave a description of what portion of the project they had been working.

“The group started with the idea of programming a light show to go with music picked by the students. This is a program we will work on each year. Our eighth graders will move up, but our 7th graders will stay to help the upcoming classes. This is something we can see growing each year,” stated Brisendine.

SRO Alan Nelson has also been helping the class with this project.

Board member Cat Gonzales stated, “When we see it all on display, it is going to be great knowing our students had a hand in it.”

Athletic Director Aarrhon Flores gave his report on athletics throughout the district, and things are going well. Basketball kicks off this week.

BISD Superintendent Chris Smith stated, “The girls State Championship ring presentation will be November 30th at the game against Tascosa. I know this is something everyone is looking forward to, and we hope everyone will come out to that.”

District Student and Employee recognition was done in person for the first time in nearly two years.

BMS had two Students of the Month due to a tie in voting.

The Board also approved purchase of two SRO (School Resource Officer) pickups. “We are in a rotation plan to replace aging vehicles, and these two vehicles are currently being held together with baling wire and duct tape,” stated Smith.

The Board did receive a bid from Stanley Ford for two F-150 pickups. The pickups will be four-door. The wrapping and lights will be added by the district. The GMP was approved at $95,000 for both vehicles. The district should, hopefully, have the vehicles by mid January.

Smith stated, “We are about to see lots of progress at the new high school building. The gym floor is scheduled to be poured next week. Lighting in the academic area will be finished up soon. We should see the building, including the gym be closed up completely soon.” The district will be giving tours to high school teachers soon, so they can see their new classrooms.

In enrollment, BISD is up by 46 kids. “Every campus is up this month. That is a great thing,” stated Smith.

Following the business of the school district, the Board went into a two hour training time, required for school board members.

The Board will next meet on Monday, December 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building.
