The Brownfield City Council met on Thursday evening and made fairly quick work of a light agenda.
The scheduled May 2nd election was called by the Council. Positions coming open for this election are Mayor (currently held by Geronimo Gonzales) District 1 (Ricky Rocha), District 2 (Mary Valdonado) and District 3 (Judy Besler). As Brownfield does have term limits, Rocha and Valdonado are not eligible to seek re-election at this time. Filing has begun and may be done at the Terry County Elections Office on West Main.
Quarterly Reports were heard from Fire Chief Dennis Rowe, Police Chief Tony Serbantez, Code Enforcement Officer Ramon Soliz, Municipal Court Judge Ken Cole, and Parks and Recreation Director Scott Jackson.
The Quarterly Financial Report from the Visitor Information Center was given by Brownfield Chamber of Commerce Director Lorena Valencia.
The Council approved funds from the Hotel Occupancy Tax Revenue for advertising in the TravelHost Magazine of West Texas.
The Brownfield City Council Scholarship criteria was updated. In the past, this has only been open to children of City employees. The Council amended this to include one scholarship awarded to a Senior who is a resident of the City of Brownfield. These scholarships will be for $500 per semester and will also include a laptop as part of the scholarship. Applications for these scholarships can be found at City Hall or the high school counselor’s office.
