Brownfield Cubs fall in season opener

It was a tough night for the Brownfield Cubs. They did some things right, but there is plenty to be worked on in the coming days, as the Cubs fell to Friona by a score of 42-14.

Take back a pick six and a kickoff return for a TD, and the game is much different. But the fact is that both those things took place and there are definitely things to work on for the coaching staff and the players in the next week.

Friona scored early on a run. The Cubs got the ball back and ended up having to punt, only the punt did not get off and Friona was able to score again, making the score 14-0 in the first quarter.

In the 2nd, Friona would intercept a pass and score again, but the Cubs matched that score when QB Zarius Garcis ran the ball in for a TD. Unfortunately, the kickoff was returned for another Chief’s touchdown and the score was 28-7 at the half.

The Cubs came out with purpose in the second half and marched the ball down the field for a score on a pass to Austin Ferrirea.

But the Chiefs would continue to run the ball and the final score was 42-14.

There were some bright spots for the Cubs. But, again, there is plenty to work on to get ready for next week’s matchup against Tulia.

Coach Aarrhon Flores told his guys to hold their heads up and move on from this loss. “We have work to do tomorrow. We are going to forget about this one and move on to the next one. You guys know I love you and I want you to hold your heads up and be ready for next week.”

“We can’t keep shooting ourselves in the foot and win ball games,” stated Coach Flores. ” It is only up from here. We are going back to work and we will come back next week a much better team. This team has a lot of pride and they don’t quit. We have lots of young guys and we are learning. I am not worried about this team. We will fix our mistakes and move on.”

The Cubs will head to Tulia next week for a 7 p.m. game against the Hornets.
