The BISD Board met on Monday, February 10 with a full agenda, which was worked through quickly. Superintendent Chris Smith reported to the Board that work was getting underway on the new high school building. “We are seeing a lot of dirt moving around, but that is where it starts,” Smith told TownTalk. He also gave a report on the Tennis locker room construction project, which was also a part of the bond package. The District is subbing out this project themselves and thereby, saving money on the project. The Board approved the $49,700 bid for the concrete and metal building. An awning and some stonework will be included in the exterior work. “This is going to come in significantly less than was budgeted, with the district doing the subbing of the project. Coach Hammons has been in the process from the very beginning. Work should begin very soon. We are excited to get this project underway.” stated Smith.
Smith also informed the Board that one of the grants awarded last year had come through and the district would be purchasing three dual welding stations, which will be six total stations. The Clean-Air Ductless Weld Stations are the best there are out there, according to Smith. These were to be ordered on Tuesday with delivery in about two to three months. These will be completely paid for by the grant.
As far as enrollment and attendance goes, the district currently has 1,657 students enrolled which is a drop of 46 students from the same time last year. Attendance for the year is currently at 94.19%. “For the week, we were at 87.7% but we have been dealing with the flu and the weather.” Smith also stated that, in the summer when the district does their final submission, the state will drop the 8 – 10 lowest days of the year. Smith feels like the district’s attendance percentages will be better once those numbers are dropped.
Always one of the highlights of the meeting is the recognition of employees and students of the month. Honored as District-Wide Student of the Month was little Tenlee Luther from Colonial Heights. Tenlee is a precious child who works very hard everyday at school. Miranda Tijerina, who is a paraprofessional at Colonial Heights, was named as the District-Wide Employee of the Month. Also recognized were the Campus Employees of the Month. Honored were Nancy Mendieta – BBAC, Andrea Minor – Oak Grove, Jordan Windholz – BMS , Kelsey Lamprecht – BHS, and Enedina “Lena” Valdez – Child Nutrition.
The Board will hold their next regular meeting on Monday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the Administration Building of BISD.
