The Brownfield ISD Board of Trustees met on Monday evening, October 19 with most members attending via Zoom.
The Board approved a recommendation by the Administration to provide additional Emergency Paid Sick Leave Act Benefits under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. This will allow the District to pay the full 100% of an employee’s salary, rather than the 75% pay and 25% leave that is protected under a certain provision under the CARES Act. “This will better serve our employees and their families and also removes an undue administrative burden on our business office when they have to figure the 75% and then the 25% in reporting,” stated Superintendent Chris Smith. “We are doing this for the right reason, for our employees, but the reality is that doing the work to divide these funds out costs us more money in man hours.”
The Board also approved the Gifted and Talented Handbook that had not been readdressed in some time. Assistant Superintendent Melissa Oliva told the board that GT Coordinator Susan Brisendine had worked hard on getting this together for the Board’s approval.
The Board approved the BISD Asynchronous Learning Plan that is required by the Texas Education Agency in order to earn Average Daily Attendance funding. This document had previously been submitted to TEA and has been accepted by them on first reading. “Many other districts had to redo their plans a few times before getting TEA approval,” state Smith. “Mrs. Oliva worked very hard in getting ours done right and it was approved at first reading.”
In the Superintendent’s report, Smith stated that the District now has 269 virtual learners, which is down from 320 a month ago.
The Board recognized Jesus Soto, who is a Kindergartner at Oak Grove as Student of the Month. Employees of the Month recognized were BBAC- Molly Martinez, Oak Grove – Liana Garcia, BMS – Eileen Garcia, and BHS – Adam Rodriquez. Those recognized were not in attendance due to safety practices but will be recognized on a video at a later date.
The meeting was adjourned. The Board has their next regular meeting scheduled for Monday November 16.
