Candy Canes and Christ at Yoakum County Library StoryTime

dec-7-lineupYoakum County Library in Plains started December off with a red-and-white, sweet StoryTime on Wednesday, December 7, 2016. After counting down the days until Christmas, the pledges to the United States and Texas flags were said. The group then acted out a rhyme called “Five Little Christmas Trees.”

Karma Wilson’s book “Mortimer’s Christmas Manger” was the first book to be read. This delightful story has beautiful illustrated pictures by well-known artist Jane Chapman. The children enjoyed watching Mortimer the Mouse find a new home and the true meaning of Christmas. A YouTube video by Kiboomers called “Five Little Candy Canes” was shown on the TV, as well as accompanied by a felt story.

The book “Who Was Born This Special Day” was the next reading. This pastel picture book included a wide range of stable animals for the children to identify. A song called “Christmas Bells” was taught to the youngsters, and a bright book illustrated by Lauren Castillo called “Christmas Is Here” was the last reading.

The group was then split to allow for a small rotation of activities. Some children went to paint wooden ornaments. There was a variety of stable animals as well as a star for them to choose. Another set of children went to the S.T.E.A.M. stations. STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Math. While the group worked, “Veggie Tales Christmas” music played.

After the “Wave Goodbye” rhyme, the children grabbed a sack containing a candy cane with poem, sticker, literacy tips, and a special printout for a Christmas dice game.

Those in attendance were Tabitha, Selah, Kefira, Elijah, Gabe, Jazzmin, Payton, Bryson, Cecilia, and Francisco.

Next week, the group needs to dress warm for a Deco Bingo Hunt around the square! There will also be a Christmas party on Wednesday, December 14, at the next StoryTime. All ages are welcome with their caregivers at 10:00 a.m..

The group will dismiss for the last two weeks of the month.
