Charles “Chili” Black was born in Colorado City, Texas, to Carlton and Opal Priddy Black on November 30, 1937. His life on earth ended in Lubbock, Texas on September 27, 2018.
Chili married Carolyn Bilberry on September 6, 1957, in Colorado City. They were both graduates of Colorado High School, and they continued and completed their educations at Texas Tech. Chili received Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Tech.
His coaching career began in Post in 1962 and concluded there in 2003. There were additional coaching stops in Denver City and in Winters. His assignments included football, basketball, track, and golf. He worked hard and believed in his athletes.
Chili and Carolyn raised two sons, Chuck and Bill, both of whom followed their dad into education and coaching. The family worshiped together at First United Methodist Church.
Chili and Carolyn enjoyed many years of travel, both domestic and international. They visited numerous locales in the United States as well as destinations in Europe, Asia, Mexico, South America and Africa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald Ray Black.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Post; Chuck Black and wife Angi of Pleasanton; Bill Black and wife Cynthia of Lubbock. Grandchildren: Kenzie Brinkley and husband Brandon of Lubbock, Katie Glenn and husband Trey of Midland, Seth Black of Pleasanton and Rachel Black of Pleasanton. Cousin: Brenda Lee Jennings of Weatherford, Oklahoma.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Coach Chili Black is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Monday, October 1, at First United Methodist Church in Post.
