City Council in Denver City hears audit

The City Council met on Monday night, May 2, where the only item on the agenda was the presentation of the FY 2015 audit report from Myatt, Blume, and Osburn.

During the visitors portion of the meeting Denver City resident Donald Jones approached the Council concerning the new curb and gutter projects, specifically around the area of West Cedar. He said the amount of dirt between the street and the curb was causing some major footing problems.

Mayor Tommy Hicks told Jones the project was still not finished and assured him until that happened his concerns would be addressed by city street crews.

During the announcement portion Councilman Ronald Weir recognized those high school athletes, the members of the One Act play, tennis, and UIL Literary members who will be advancing to the state competition over the next two weeks.

City Manager Stan David also invited everyone to attend the National Day of Prayer which will be held in Bennett Plaza across the street from the City Hall on Thursday, May 5 from 12:15 to 12:45.

Sham Myatt then proceeded to go through the annual report highlighting several areas in the report including each major fund of the City of Denver City. The fiscal year ended on September 30, 2015.

“It is our responsibility to express opinions on the financial statements based on our audit,” Myatt stated in his report. “An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements.”

In the financial highlights the report showed assets exceeded its liabilities by $15,755,034; Denver City’s net position increased $253,648 as a result of this year’s operations; the City’s business-type activities decreased $65,147; and the City’s governmental activities increased $318,795.

During the year, the City’s government funds had expenditures of $3,507,580 which was $221,462 more than the $3,286,118 generated in tax and other revenues for the governmental programs. This compares to last year when revenues exceeded expenditures by $201,582.

The General Fund ended the year with a fund balance of $4,492,420.

After the final review and answering questions the Council unanimously approved the report.

After approving to pay all bills the Council adjourned.

Council members in attendance included Joan Breith, Ronald Weir, Dalphene Benson, Keith Mensch and Mayor Tommy Hicks. Council members Robert Hanneman and Barbara Qualls were not in attendance.

The next meeting will be 7 p.m. May 16.
