Commissioners canvass November 2 election

The Terry County Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, November 8, in the Basement Meeting Room of the Terry County Courthouse. Among items on the agenda was the canvassing of the November 2 election.

There were 490 ballots cast in the election which was entirely on amendments to the Texas Constitution. All amendments passed in Terry County, and in the state.

Krystal Valentine, Elections Office Coordinator stated, “We had no issues with the voting machines. Lots of people asked questions, and we were able to reassure them that they were entirely safe from tampering. It was a pretty low turnout, which we expected, but we were able to see that the machines work as they are supposed to.”

In other business, Commissioner Precinct 1 Mike Swain has been in talks with the new owner of the old Seleta Jane Brownfield Clubhouse building on Broadway about moving the historical marker. The new owner does not wish the marker to remain on his property. As the Seleta Jane Brownfield history goes along with the Kendrick Memorial Library history, the library was designated as the new site for the marker.

The Maids and Matrons Club, who originally used the Seleta Jane Brownfield Clubhouse for their meetings were instrumental in the beginning of the Kendrick Memorial Library, donating 3,000 books when the library was begun, officially.

There was no action required on this move.

The Commissioners did approve the CIRA contract with TAC (Texas Associaton of Counties). CIRA (County Information Resources Agency) provides services and resources to Texas counties and local governments, including email and website hosting.

Reports were approved from the County Clerk, District Clerk, Sheriff, Justice of the Peace, County Judge and Ag Office.

Having no other business, the meeting was adjourned. The Court will next meet in regular session on Monday, November 22, at 9 a.m. in the Basement Meeting Room of the Courthouse.

All Commissioners were present.
