Cross Country Competition Comes To An End In Terry County

The Brownfield Lady Cub Cross Country team with both Meadow and Wellman-Union girls cross country teams and the boys cross country teams from MHS & WUHS all had punched their tickets into the Region I Cross Country Meet Monday, October 25, 2021 at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. The weather that is typically cooler and sometimes even freezing this time of year, was not the case this year as it felt like it was summer on the cross country course. With a high between 89-91 and no wind, every cross country runner from 6A to 1A, boys and girls would feel the heat. Of course so did those who are from BHS, MHS, & WUHS.

It was not the year for a Terry County cross country athlete to advance to the state race on Nov. 5 & 6, 2021 in Round Rock TX. The last person to advance was two seasons ago in 2019 with Wellman-Union athlete Madyson Horton. The year prior in 2018 Gracen Key of Wellman-Union earned 2nd place and the team was 5th place overall. That same year Izaiah Garibaldo of BHS and Brodey Yates of WUHS competed in the boys state meet.

In 1A Wellman-Union girls finished as a team 17th out of 22. Kloe Guenther and Madyson Horton led the charge for the team and both getting the exact same time 14:02.0 and getting 19th and 20th overall. The Meadow girls had a team prior to the regional race, however they fell one short before the race due to an injury and caused the four left to run individually. The Lady Cubs would be 19th out of 24 with Freshman Rayleigh Perry being the top time of the team with a 14:24.

Moving on to the boys, the Wellman-Union Wildcats won district so they had high hopes of making it out of regionals as a team. Unfortunately that was not the case. The Wildcats as a team finished 12th out of 17 with Levi DePoyster as the lead time with 20:12. The Meadow Broncos finished 16th out of 17 with Wes Woodard leading the with a time of 23:00.
