The Cub and Lady Cub basketball teams were back in action Friday night for another district matchup against Denver City. The win moved the Cubs into 4th place alone and the Lady Cubs remain a game behind Shallowater and Idalou for the district lead.
The Lady Cubs played first and started the game with 10-0 run to take a lead and they never looked back. They bucketed twelve more points to end the first quarter with a 22-5. The Lady Cubs defense stepped up in the second quarter and only allowed four points while the offense was able to score twelve more points to take a commanding lead into the half 34-9.
The strong defense continued through the second half and the Lady offense continued to score willingly as the Lady Cubs would cruise to a 62-22 victory over the Fillies. The win moved the Lady Cubs to 8-2 in district play and 23-5 overall.
The team was led in scoring by Dabria Blackwell and Gabi Fields with 12points each. Deja Johnson finished finished with ten points, Ashley Ramirez with eight, Lindsey Herrera with eight, Raelee Garza five and Morgan Silva Led the team with nine rebounds and Tia Johnson finished with eight.
The Cubs took the court in need of a win to stay in the playoff hunt and quickly found themselves behind early in the ball game 12-9. Thats when senior Malachi Garza caught fire and scored 10 unanswered points giving the Cubs a lead for the first time in the game outscoring the Mustangs 15-4 in the second taking a 24-16 lead into the half.
The Cubs continued to rally in the third quarter with strong shooting from Jaden Martinez and Nikko Vela who scored 11 of the Cubs 19 points in the quarter while the defense held the mustangs to only nine points.
The Mustangs made a final run in the fourth quarter going on a 12-0 run until the Cubs got back on track scoring eleven straight and claiming victory with a 54-43 victory.
