The Brownfield Cubs have experienced an up and down season for sure, and Tuesday night’s Bi-District match up with the Canadian Wildcats was no different. The Cubs started off strong, in the loss, with Jaden Martinez and Nikko Vela scoring two quick threes to give the Cubs an early lead.
The Wildcats would battle back, however and take an 18-13 lead into the 2nd quarter. The Cats continued their run, outscoring the Cubs 23-12 in the quarter to bring the half-time score to 41-25.
The Cubs came out roaring in the second half, out scoring the Cats 14-9 from the floor, but free throws were key for the Cats, as Escamilla went to the line twice, and hit four in a row.
The fourth quarter found the Cubs playing hard to keep their season alive. The Cubs out scored their opponents 20 – 11 in the period. The Cubs were able to get within five of the Wildcats with less than three minutes to play. Kyle Suarez was sweet from the line, hitting five out of six at the charity stripe. The Cubs had 15 points from beyond the arc on the night, to the Cats 27.
Leading scorers for the Cubs were Jaden Martinez with 12, including two three pointers, Malachi Garza with 11, Nikko Vela with nine and Kyle Suarez with eight.
This ended the Cubs basketball season. Congratulations to Coach Steve Rhodes and the Cubs on a fun and entertaining season.
