Cubs fall to DC in district opener

The Brownfield Cubs took a tough loss in their first district game against Denver City. It started with a strong drive by the Cubs in the first quarter, but a failed 4th and 1 gave the ball to DC on their own 10 yard line. Denver city took advantage and drove down the field for their first of 6 touchdowns on the night. The Cub offense struggled again in their second possession and punted to DC. The Cub defense was able to put DC in 3rd and long twice but DC was able to convert both times and scored again. On the Cubs next possession Denver city intercepted a pass and capitalized with another score. On the Cubs final drive of the first half they ran out of time after Nicko Vela caught a pass for 30 yards to get the Cubs into DC territory making the score at 31-0 DC. Denver city came out and scored again to start the second half. The Cub offense finally got on the board in the 3rd when receiver Jaylen (Pete) Marroquin caught a 40 yards pass to get the cubs in scoring position. Marroquin then scored the touchdown when quarterback Malachi Garza hit him in stride from 6 yards out. Lorenzo Garza then made a reception completing the 2 point conversion. Denver city would not be stopped however scoring once again in the 4th quarter. Quarterback Malachi Garza scored one last time with a 59 yard run. The game ended with the score being 44-14, Denver City. Click here for pictures.
