Cubs hope to get District started with a “W” over Shallowater

by admin

Shallowater is notoriously tough. Even when they aren’t. They lost lots of seniors last year. They have a new coach. They are sitting at 3-2 going into district play with a tough loss to Childress and a loss to Abernathy on their resume.

The Cubs come in with an 0-4 record, and are hungry for that first win.

Head Coach Aarrhon Flores stated, “We are ready to get a win. The games really matter now. Everyone is 0-0 right now. We are playing for a district championship. I know we can compete. We are ready to play.”

The Cubs took advantage of a bye week to get most, if not all their injured players back on the field. Also, the Cubs did not lose a single varsity player to grades this first six weeks.

The Friday night game against Shallowater will be “Shally’s” homecoming. Flores says his guys are using this as motivation.

“We are using the fact that this is Homecoming for Shallowater as incentive to go out there and ruin their homecoming. We will definitely give them a game,” stated Flores.

Flores said that one thing they have been hammering home in practice is the “Want To.” “You have to want it bad enough to go hard every play. You have to have that ‘hate to lose’ mentality that pushes you to win. Every play matters. Our guys know this and have been working hard for this week.”

Shallowater’s defense is good at stopping the run, according to Flores. And they like to run. “They do not pass the ball too much. They are big upfront on both sides, but our athletes match well with them, as far as athleticism goes. We may not be as big in certain areas, but we match them with toughness and physicality.”

The Cubs will have to play clean, penalty-free football and create a lot of energy on the field and on the sidelines. “We can’t give up any 3rd and long plays. We can’t let them have any explosive plays. We are just going to have to be ready on every down, every play. And I believe in our guys. I believe we can do this,” stated Flores.

Flores also stated Cub fans should expect to see some big changes in the lineup. Changes that the team is totally bought into.

The Friday night game at Shallowater will begin at 7 p.m. Also, Shallowater is not accepting any cash for tickets, so have your debit or credit card handy.

Let’s head over to Shallowater and support our Cubs as they begin a District Title hunt!
