Cubs prepare to face Tigers on the road

The Brownfield Cubs are coming off a great win against Kermit last week. The Cubs scored first and held on all the way to a 48-25 victory, Slaton, on the other hand are fresh off a 45-2 loss to Denver City. They had beaten Kermit the previous week in a 27-26 nail biter.

Head Cub Coach Aarrhon Flores has been warning his guys all week. “Don’t look at that Kermit score and think this game will be an easy victory. Because it won’t.” Flores stated that the Tigers match up with the Cubs very well size wise. “We will be playing guys who are about our size, but I feel like we are better athletes.”

Slaton plays a defense that is cautious. “They are just not real aggressive on defense,” stated Flores. “I feel like we will be able to run against them, but look for us to pass the ball, as well.”

On the offensive side, Slaton is all over the place. “They run lots of different looks, with really no rhyme or reason. We will have to be ready on every down.”

As always, the Cubs will need to play good clean ball. “We don’t need any penalties or costly mistakes. We need to get on that field and take care of business like we know how,” stated Flores.

Look for the Cubs to continue their successful combination of Zarius Garcia and George Rivera at quarteback. Zarius really had a great game against Kermit, scoring two touchdowns and throwing for another.

The Cub defense really came through last week capturing three turnovers.

“We are going down there expecting a battle. We know that the winner of this game will be guaranteed a playoff spot and we want to go ahead and seal that up now,” stated Flores. “The guys have practiced really hard all week and they are ready to get after it.”

The game will be at Slaton on Friday, October 22, with a 7:00 p.m. start.
