Its been a rollercoaster ride for Coach Steve Rhodes and the Cubs after a trip to the Regional tournament a year ago. Coach Rhodes stated that the team was bringing back only 2.3 points from last year after graduating 10 seniors.
So he expected some growing pains for sure to start the season.
The Cubs dropped 2 straight before picking up their first win of the season over Kermit last week. Then in the Gene Messer Shootout the Cubs were unable to get a victory in 4 games with their closest game coming in their final game against Coronado.
The Cubs entered Tuesday nights matchup with 6A Odessa High needing a boost of confidence after a rough start. The Cubs looked out matched with Odessa having multiple players over 6’3 in height but the Cubs showed just how hard it is to win a game at the PIT.
The Cubs took an early lead after some great shooting from the floor from senior Malachi Garza and Junior Nikko Vela. The Cubs would lead the Broncos 16-12 after the first quarter.
The Cubs would extend their lead playing great defense while Junior Jaden Martinez hit some big shots to keep the Cub lead, outscoring the Broncos 17-10 making the score 33-22 at the half .
The Broncos did not go down easily as they continued to fight back and keep the Cubs close. With 1 minute left in the game the Broncos were able to get within 3 points of the Cubs but it was not enough as the Cubs pulled away in the end with a 67-59 victory.
Coach Rhodes stated after the game, “We played great tonight and we really needed this win. It has been a slow start but our team is starting to figure out their roles and now we are seeing good team basketball. Tonight the team passed the ball on offense and found the open man and played great defense against a much bigger team. Thats what we need if we are going to compete this season.”
The Cubs were lead in scoring by Jaden Martinez with 14 points followed by Malachi Garza with 11, Rocky Vicencio with 10 and Richard Piedra with 9.
The Cubs will now head to Andrews for another tournament. Make sure to follow us on TownTalk Radio facebook page for all the stories from the Cubs and Lady Cubs.
