Cubs win big over Tornillo to improve to 1-1 in district play.

The Brownfield Cubs bounced back for their second district game with a substantial win against Tornillo. Brownfield won the toss and deferred their kick off to the second half. Tornillo ran four plays, ending in an incomplete pass, giving the ball back to the Cubs. The Cubs ran 68 yards in 9 plays ending with a touchdown scored by Lorenzo Garza. In the Cub’s second possession, Jayden Martinez ran an impressive 63 yards reverse for another touchdown. Tornillo’s next possession was 3 and out with a punt on the 4th down, returning possession to Brownfield. On the Cub’s 3rd down, Lorenzo Garza scored another touchdown, as well as a successful 2-point conversion. Tornillo got the ball back but lost it again as Cub safety Zavier Garcia picked off a pass over the middle. The Cubs scored yet another touchdown by Richard Piedra. On the first down of Tornillo’s fifth possession of the night, the ball was fumbled and picked up by Hunter Sisson who ran 37 yards to score another touchdown for the Cubs. On Tornillo’s next possession, they moved the ball 17 yards before it was intercepted by Kyle Suarez. Brownfield got possession of the ball back, allowing another touchdown by Jeremiah Mendez and leaving the score at 42-0 for the first quarter.

Tornillo started the second quarter struggling to complete a pass and turned the ball over. Brownfield used a trio of running backs to quickly move 54 yards down the field before freshman Kayden Moore scored for the Cubs on a pass play from Nathaniel Gensler. The next possessions for both teams were mired in penalties and bad snaps, and both teams ended up punting to end the half. Click here for Pictures

Brownfield opened the second half with a reverse kickoff return and on the ensuing drive, a bad snap caused a fumble which Tornillo promptly ran back into the end zone, but a personal foul negated the touchdown. On Tornillo’s next possession, they slowly moved the ball until a batted ball was intercepted by Ruben Rodriguez. Brownfield then had a bad snap, leading to a fumble which Tornillo recovered. Tornillo followed with fumble, which was recovered by the Cubs, providing Raphael Vicencio with the opportunity to score a 60 yard touchdown. Tornillo’s next possession ended in a punt, allowing Brownfield to take over the ball and run out the clock, closing the game with a score of 55-0 for the Cubs.
