No matter what classification the Fillies end up in, it seems like longtime rival Bushland is right around the corner. Once again that’s the case this year as both teams are slated to play tonight in the 3A Region I Quarterfinals postseason play and knew if they both had two playoff wins, then the two volleyball powerhouses would be pitted against each other once again.
The #3 Fillies, who went through district play with a perfect 8-0 record and the district championship, started postseason play with a 25-16, 25-7, 25-14 win over River Road and then followed that with a 25-21, 25-8, 25-12 win over San Angelo Texas Leadership Charter Academy.
To recap the past two playoff games that the Fillies have had, they started strong against River Road jumping out to early leads in all three sets. Holly Hemmeline and Lexi Ivy paced the Fillie offensive attack with nine kills each. Even with eight service errors, the Fillies were able to maintain their composure and their offensive show with Jayleen Villarreal making those kills routine with her pinpoint sets. The talented junior was credited with 23 assists. The Lady Cats threatened to extend the match to four sets as they jumped out to an 8-4 third set lead. But the Fillies regrouped to put the rally down and finish off the match with a 25-14 third set win.
In the TLCA match, the Fillies once again started strong jumping out to a 9-4 lead. But the Eagles kept hanging around and climbed back into the set tying the set up four times before the Fillies started breaking away at 14-14 with six unanswered points for a 20-14 lead. The Lady Eagles remained focus and once again cut into the Fillie lead and were just trailing 23-21 before the Fillies capitalized off a TLCA error and a service winner by Hemmeline. The Fillies dominated the second set from the opening serve jumping out to a 15-5 lead behind kills from Ivy and the serving of Marley Jordan. Hemmeline delivered the final kill for a 25-8 win. Set number three also belonged the Fillies.
Defensive play by Morgan Johnson, Moraima Villegas, and Villarreal complimented the offensive play of Ivy, Hemmeline, and Jordan to led to a 25-12 score and the Area championship gold ball. Ivy and Johnson had two aces each and defensively Villarreal, Ivy, and Jordan all had two blocks. Also, on defense Hemmeline had 17 digs, Johnson came up with 15, and Villegas had 13. Hemmeline finished with 21 kills, Ivy had 11, and Jordan had six. Villarreal had 39 assists.
The #3 Fillies will take on the #7 Bushland Lady Falcons tonight. Bushland, also a district winner, defeated the Fillies District rival Brownfield in bi-district action 25-9, 25-3, 25-14 and then took care of Wall in a three-set sweep. A win against Bushland will put the Fillies in the Regional tournament at Lubbock Cooper against the winner of Brock and Nacona at 8 pm on Friday.
