The Fillies volleyball team finished the first half of district play with wins over Littlefield on their courts and against Shallowater on the Fillies home court. The Fillies defeated Littlefield 25-15, 25-20, 25-15 and Shallowater 25-13, 25-22, 25-15.
In the Littlefield matchup the two teams traded out points early on before the Fillies went on a 7-0 run to go on top 12-5. That lead grew to 15-7 and then 20-10 behind the serving of Marley Jordan and kills by Lexi Ivy. Charlene Villarreal then served out the match.
Just like the first set the two teams came out trading points before the Fillies broke an 8-8 match into a 14-10 lead. The Lady Cats kept battling to eventually pull to within a 22-20 score. A Lexi Ivy kill made it 23-20 and Karley Moore served out the set which included an ace that made the score 24-20.
Another close set ensued in the third set with the two teams battling back and forth that resulted in a 6-6 tie. At that point Madi McLeroy toed the line and rattled off five straight points to put the Fillies up 11-6. Littlefield made a slight comeback that cut the lead to 18-15. Villarreal then served out the set and match with seven straight points and the 25-15 win.
Offensively, Lexi Ivy paced the Fillies with 18 kills. Marley Jordan, Karley Moore, and Lexie Pacheco all had three kills each. Jayleen Villarreal had 28 assist and also had a good night serving with four aces. Marley Jordon also had two aces.
Defensively, Marley had seven blocks while Karley and Jayleen both had three. Also on defense Lexi and Marley had eight digs each, Jayleen came up with seven, Moraima Villegas and Madi had six each.
In the Shallowater match played last Saturday the Fillies started off slowly falling behind 6-1. After a Shallowater hitting error, Jayleen once again came to the service line and served seven straight points to put the Fillies up 9-6. With Lexi serving the Fillies went up 12-7 followed by Madi who gave the Fillies a comfortable 17-9 Denver City lead. Karley and Jayleen served eight of the next 12 points for a 25-13 first set win.
The second set was another back and forth affair with the Fillies finally gaining control of the set at 10-6. Once again Shallowater staged another come back cutting the Fillies lead to 15-14 and then evening the match at 18-18. Shallowater then had their first lead in the second set going up 22-21. But at that point Marley served four points and a second 25-22 set win.
The third set was much like the previous two with neither side leading by more than two points. It was once again Marley who toed the line to give the Fillies a 13-8 lead. DC gained some momentum at that point and upped their lead to 20-13. Moraima once again found some open spots on her serve to give the Fillies a 23-14 lead. Marley served the final point to give the hometown Fillies a sweep of the match.
Marley finished with three aces and Jayleen added two more. It was once again the offensive play of Lexi and Marley 12 and nine kills each. Madi added three more kills. Jayleen had 25 assists.
Marley had eight blocks while Moraima had 16 digs, Lexi had 15, Marley had 11, and Madi finished with 11.
The two wins upped the Fillies season record to 30-9 and district record to 4-0.
The Fillies hosted Brownfield on Tuesday to start the second half of district play. They will travel to Idalou for a 11am tip off on Saturday and then will take a break from district play on Tuesday with a short trip to Seminole for a 6pm start time.
