Mario Sanchez was clicking on all cylinders Friday night as he led the Mustangs to a 49-6 win over the Reagan County Owls ending the Mustangs two-game slide.
The sophomore quarterback connected on eight of his passing attempts for 149 yards that included three touchdowns and then used his legs for an additional 128 yards on 11 carries and one touchdown. After the Mustangs forced two punting situation on the Owls first two possessions the offense took over going 64 yards in five plays to open the scoring for the night. Sanchez connected with a streaking Nathaniel Cruz from 25 yards out with 4:29 left in the first quarter of play. After Juan Herrera added the PAT the Mustangs were on top 7-0.
The Mustang defense once forced the Owls into a three and out series and after a short punt the Mustangs took over on the Owls 48-yard line. Turning to their running game it took the Mustangs just four plays to cover the distance with Aaron Mendoza going the final five yards for the touchdown. Herrera was once again true on the PAT and with 27 seconds still left in the first quarter the Mustangs had upped their lead to 14-0.
Once again the defense forced Reagan County into a three and out and forced still another short punt. This time the offense took over on the Owls 43 yards line. It took the Mustangs less than two minutes to cover that distance with Alex Mendoza getting the call and scoring from the five-yard line. Herrera was good on the PAT and with 9:19 left in the first half of play the rout was on with the Mustangs up 21-0.
On Reagan County next drive the defense caused a fumble that landed in the arms of middle linebacker Elias Yanez. That turnover led to an 89-yard drive in five plays highlighted by a Sanchez to Nick Garza 14 yard touchdown pass. Once again Herrera was good on his PAT and with 6:14 left in the first half of play the Mustangs lead had stretched to 28-0.
The final Mustang touchdown came with 4:21 left in the first half when Sanchez once again hooked up with Garza, this time from 20 yards out. After the successful PAT, the Mustangs were on top 35-0. Reagan County’s only score came with 18 seconds showing on the clock in the first half when they scored on a 14-yard pass to a wide-open receiver in the corner of the end zone. The 2-point PAT was no good and the Mustangs went into intermission on top 35-6.
Receiving the second half kickoff, the Mustangs went right to work going 57 yards in six plays. Sanchez called his own number and scored from 12 yards out. The PAT was good giving the Mustangs a 42-6 lead with 7:39 left in the third quarter. The Mustangs final score came with 9:34 left in the game when Alejandro Chavarria on a 11 yard sweep. Herrera made it a perfect 7/7 on PAT leaving the final score at 49-6.
Behind Sanchez and his 128 rushing yards was Aaron Mendoza with 77 yards on eight carries, Chavarria had 62 yards on six carries, Uriel Rodriguez had 12 yards on four carries, Eziquiel Gonzales had five yards on one carry, and Alexis Mendoza had one yard on four carries. On the receiving end, Leonel Razo had two catches for 38 yards, Nick Garza came down with two catches for 35 yards, Nathaniel Cruz came up with two receptions for 45 yards, and Josh Mills had one catch for eight yards.
The Mustang defense gave up 164 yards passing and another 38 yards rushing with several quarterback sacks. The win upped the Mustangs season record to 3-3. The Mustangs will return home on Friday when they host Crane a 42 to 14 winner over Ozona last Friday. Next week they will be open before starting district play in Brownfield.
