DC Mustangs Finish as Runner-Up in Monahans Tourney

The Mustangs won three of their four games at the Monahans tournament held last weekend.

They started off with a 6-2 win over Permian JV and followed that with a 4-1 win over Forsan. In their third game they scored in the late innings to defeat Kermit 6-3 before losing to host Monahans 7-2 in their final outing.

In the Permian game the Mustangs opened up scoring in the first inning. An error scored one run for Denver City Mustangs. In the bottom of the first inning, Permian JV tied things up at one.

The Mustangs pulled away for good with five runs in the third inning. Mario Sanchez started the inning by drawing a walk and scoring one run. Sebastian Perez also drew a walk, scoring one run. 

Jose Nunez led things off on the hill for the Mustangs. He allowed zero hits and two runs over four and a third innings, striking out one.

Ferny Vega went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Denver City Mustangs in hits. The Mustangs were sure handed in the field and didn’t commit a single error. Erlan Lozano had the most chances in the field with six.

This win was followed with a big win over Forsan also on Thursday.

The Mustangs notched three runs in the fourth inning. RJ Hurtado, Erlan Lozano, and David Escobar all contributed in the big inning with RBIs.

Escobar led things off on the pitcher’s mound for Denver City Mustangs . He surrendered one run on zero hits over five innings, striking out nine and walking one.

Sebastian Perez went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Mustangs in hits. Hurtado led Denver City Mustangs with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with six stolen bases.

In their third game against Kermit the Mustangs once again came up big in the late innings to pull out the win.

The game was tied at three with Denver City Mustangs batting in the top of the fourth when David Escobar drew a walk, scoring one run.

The Mustangs opened up scoring in the first inning, when Sebastian Perez drew a walk, scoring one run. They then took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth Escobar drew a walk, scoring one run and Perez doubled on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs.

Ernesto Martinez was on the pitcher’s mound for the Mustangs. He lasted six innings, allowing one hit and three runs while striking out seven and walking one.

Ferny Vega, Perez, Martinez, Enrique Banuelos, and RJ Hurtado each managed one hit to lead Denver City Mustangs . Hurtado led Denver City Mustangs with two stolen bases, as they ran wild on the base paths with seven stolen bases.

In their last outing against Monahans 6 Mustang errors proved to be too much as they dropped their final game of the tournament.

The Mustangs fell behind early and couldn’t come back in their 7-2 loss to Monahans on Friday. Monahans HS scored on an passed ball during Alonzo Ruiz’s at bat and a walk by Joshua McCracken in the first inning.

Even in the loss the Mustangs outhit the Lobos five to two.

Monahans scored three runs in the fifth inning. The big inning for Monahans HS came thanks to singles by Jj Santillian and Iran Hernandez.

Ferny Vega led things off on the mound for Denver City Mustangs . He went four and two-thirds innings, allowing six runs on zero hits and striking out eight. Erlan Lozano threw one-third of an inning out of the bullpen.

Nathan Dyck, David Escobar, Vega, RJ Hurtado, and Ernesto Martinez each managed one hit to lead the Mustangs.

Monahans didn’t commit a single error in the field. Hernandez had five chances in the field, the most on the team.
