In what was billed as a close game, the Mustangs completely dominated visiting Brownfield in a 44-14 win in the district opener for both teams.
But it didn’t look anything like the runaway it ended up being when the Cubs took the opening kickoff and made it deep into Mustang territory. Facing a 4th and short the Mustangs came up with a defensive stop and turned the ball over to their offense.
Starting on their 15-yard line and 8:50 showing on the clock the Mustangs went 85 yards eight plays with quarterback Mario Sanchez going the final five yards for the first score of the night. Juan Herrera added the PAT and with 3:04 still left in the first quarter the Mustangs had a lead they never gave up.
On the Cubs first offensive play after the Mustang touchdown they turn the ball over on a fumble and the Mustangs took over on the Cubs 23-yard line. Less than a minute later Sanchez once again snuck in from the 1-yard line after Aaron Mendoza broke loose for a 22-yard run. Herrera was again good on the PAT and with 2:10 still left in the first quarter the Mustangs lead was now up to 14-0.
Forcing the Cubs into a three and out the Mustangs took over on the Cubs 45. Coming up short on a third down Coach Daniel Fontenot sent in the field goal team. This time Herrera was good from 34 yards out and with 9:05 left in the first half the Mustangs were now up 17-0.
On the Cubs next possession Uriel Rodriquez stepped in front of a Cub pass giving the Mustangs a first down on their 39. It didn’t take long for the Mustangs to score again when Sanchez found Rodriquez down the middle for a 31-yard touchdown toss. The PAT was once again good and with 4:05 left in the second quarter the Mustangs lead had grown to 24-0.
Another three and out forced still another Brownfield punt that was returned to the Mustangs 45. This time the Mustangs had a little trickery that resulted in a 55-yard touchdown run by Rodriquez. The PAT was good once again and with 1:08 left in the first half the Mustangs had a commanding 31-0 lead that they took into the halftime dressing room.
Receiving the second half kickoff it took the Mustangs just seven plays to go 73 yards with Aaron Mendoza going the final 15 yards for the touchdown. This time Herrera’s PAT was off the mark, but the Mustangs lead had grown to 37-0 with 6:03 left in the third quarter.
The Cubs finally got on the board on their next possession and after a 2-point conversion they had cut the Mustangs lead to 37-8.
But the Mustangs weren’t finished. A Sanchez to Alejandro Chavarria 32-yard pass gave the Mustangs still another score. Herrera added the PAT and with 10:32 left in the game the Mustang lead had grown back to 44-8.
And just like the Mustangs, the Cubs weren’t finished. On their next possession they cashed in on a 55-yard quarterback run. The PAT was no good leaving the final score at 44-14.
