DCHS Student Council Attends SUMMIT Conference

by admin

On Wednesday, January 22, 2020, 41 DCHS Student Council and FFCLA members attend the 20th Annual Youth SUMMIT at Lubbock Cooper High School. SUMMIT is a completely student led conference for teens to assist them in navigating the difficult issues of adolescent life.

DCHS Student Council contributes to SUMMIT through membership on the planning board. Students Riley Calk, Kanton Galvan, RJ Hurtado, Marley Jordon, Maddy Peters, and Diana Saenz planned two breakout sessions on vaping dangers and teenage mental wellness, and created a video for 20th anniversary of SUMMIT. As the coordinator-elect school, DCHS students were also responsible for organizing lunch.

SUMMIT began in 2001 with Lamesa High School students who wanted to address issues in the lives of students. 40 students participated in the 2001 SUMMIT. Twenty years later, over 450 students, faculty, and community members were in attendance. Keynote speakers were two students who helped planned the first SUMMIT and retired administrator Ricky Mitchell who spoke at the 2001 conference. Anniversary t-shirts were sold to fund the new SUMMIT scholarship.

Students who plan and attend SUMMIT gain skills in leadership, public speaking, problem solving, writing, media literacy, and project management. They also gain valuable experience through networking and addressing sensitive issues openly.
